The Breakdown
HOW GOOD DOES THE TECHNOLOGY & USER EXPERIENCE GET?
News in Five
AI & LEGALTECH
Consolidation, training, and ROI: Burford’s David Perla says AI hype's over. Consolidation's here, but training + ROI prove real bottlenecks.
Legal tech stocks rattled: RELX, Wolters Kluwer tank 10%+ as Claude drops legal plugin for contracts, NDAs, briefs. AI disruption sell-off.
Architecture over interface: Legal AI research: Judge tools by backend architecture, not UI. Need curated law data, domain models, firm-like workflows.
PRIVACY & SURVEILLANCE
Proving the real: Instagram is preparing to cryptographically sign authentic media at the source, allowing users to distinguish genuine photos from AI generated photos.
The master delete: California launched its DROP portal that allows residents to request that every registered data broker delete their personal information at once.
Privacy by design: The UK has started enforcing new cyber-flashing mandates under the Online Safety Act, legally requiring platforms to proactively block unsolicited explicit images before they are delivered.
LEGAL SYSTEM & POLICY
DOJ launched AI litigation task force: The Justice Department formed a task force to challenge state AI laws on Commerce Clause grounds, following an executive order pushing federal preemption.
Colorado's AI Act pushed to June 30, 2026: The law established requirements for risk-management, transparency, and algorithmic discrimination protections for high-risk AI systems.
Illinois targeted law firm MSOs and ABS: Two new bills were introduced to regulate private equity and hedge fund investments in law firm alternative business structures.
